USPS Suspends Employer FERS Contributions — Here's What It Means for You

Branch 41 Member Update | April 2026

Starting April 10, the United States Postal Service Board of Governors has suspended the Postal Service's employer contributions to the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) annuity. This was driven by a looming cash crisis — USPS projects it could run out of money as early as February 2027 — and is expected to save approximately $2.5 billion this fiscal year.

What is NOT changing:

  • Your own FERS contributions, withheld from your paycheck, will still be sent to OPM
  • Your TSP contributions are unaffected
  • USPS will still make its automatic and matching TSP contributions (up to 5% of your basic pay)
  • Your Social Security contributions continue as normal
  • Your service credit toward your FERS annuity will continue to accrue during the suspension
  • Current retirees are not affected at all
  • Your union contract is not affected

What IS changing:

Only one thing: USPS is temporarily pausing its own employer-side payments into the FERS annuity fund — the portion they owe, not you.

What does this mean if you're planning to retire soon?

According to USPS, the decision will have no impact on current employees' retirement eligibility or benefits. Your annuity calculation should not be affected.

The bigger picture

USPS is calling on Congress to act. The measures they're asking for include increasing USPS borrowing authority and reforming retirement fund liabilities. This suspension is a stopgap — not a fix. Legislative action is still needed.
